Live Activities & Dynamic Island: Real-Time Deadlines on Your iPhone

In 2022, Apple introduced Live Activities — a way for apps to display real-time, updating information on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. Originally designed for sports scores and food delivery tracking, Live Activities have become one of the most powerful features for productivity apps.

For deadline tracking, Live Activities solve a fundamental problem: you can't forget what you can't stop seeing.

What Are Live Activities?

Live Activities are persistent, updating notifications that appear in three places on your iPhone:

1. Lock Screen

A banner at the bottom of your Lock Screen that shows real-time information. Unlike regular notifications that stack up and get buried, Live Activities maintain their position and stay visible every time you glance at your phone.

2. Dynamic Island (iPhone 14 Pro and later)

The pill-shaped cutout at the top of your screen becomes an interactive display. In its compact form, it shows a small summary. Tap or long-press to expand it into a larger view with more detail.

3. Always-On Display (iPhone 15 Pro and later)

On devices with Always-On Display, Live Activities remain visible even when the screen is dimmed. Your deadline countdown is literally always visible, even when your phone is sitting on your desk.

How Live Activities Work for Deadlines

When you have a time-sensitive commitment in DON'T FORGET, the app can display it as a Live Activity. Here's what that looks like in practice:

The Compact View (Dynamic Island)

A small, always-visible indicator in the Dynamic Island shows:

  • The task name (abbreviated if needed)
  • A countdown timer or time remaining
  • A color indicator showing urgency (green → yellow → red)

This compact view is visible no matter what app you're using. Scrolling Twitter? Your deadline is at the top of the screen. Watching a YouTube video? Still there. Reading emails? Still there.

The Expanded View

Tap or long-press the Dynamic Island to see more detail:

  • Full task name
  • Exact time remaining
  • Urgency level and intensity
  • A progress bar showing how far through the deadline window you are
  • A button to mark the task as complete

The Lock Screen View

Every time you glance at your phone — whether to check the time, read a notification, or unlock it — your deadline is visible at the bottom of the Lock Screen with:

  • Task name
  • Time remaining
  • Visual urgency indicator

Why This Matters for Productivity

Ambient Awareness

The most effective productivity tools create ambient awareness — a constant, low-effort consciousness of what needs to be done. Live Activities are the ultimate ambient awareness tool because they're always visible without requiring any action from you.

You don't need to open an app. You don't need to check a widget. You don't need to do anything. The information is just there, passively reinforcing the urgency of your deadline.

Breaking the "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" Problem

The single biggest reason people miss deadlines is that they stop thinking about them. A task gets pushed to the back of your mind by more immediate concerns, and by the time it resurfaces, it's too late.

Live Activities make it physically impossible for a deadline to leave your awareness. Every phone interaction — unlocking, checking notifications, glancing at the time — reinforces the countdown.

Real-Time Urgency

Unlike static widgets that update periodically, Live Activities update in real time. Watching "2 hours 14 minutes" tick down to "2 hours 13 minutes" creates a visceral sense of passing time that a static "Due Friday" simply doesn't achieve.

This real-time countdown taps into loss aversion — the psychological tendency to work harder to avoid losing something than to gain something. Watching time slip away motivates action in a way that abstract deadlines don't.

Setting Up Live Activities

Requirements

  • iPhone running iOS 16.1 or later (Lock Screen Live Activities)
  • iPhone 14 Pro or later (Dynamic Island)
  • iPhone 15 Pro or later (Always-On Display)

Enabling Live Activities

  1. Go to Settings → DON'T FORGET
  2. Ensure Live Activities is toggled on
  3. In the app, Live Activities will automatically start for your most urgent commitment when it's within the activation window

Which Deadline Shows?

Live Activities display your single most urgent commitment — the one closest to its deadline. If you have multiple commitments, the one that needs attention most urgently takes priority.

When you complete that task, the Live Activity automatically transitions to show your next most urgent deadline (if any are within the activation window).

Customization

You can control when Live Activities activate:

  • Time threshold — How close to the deadline before the Live Activity appears (default: 8 hours)
  • Intensity-based — Only show for commitments at certain intensity levels (e.g., only Aggressive and Relentless)

Tips for Effective Use

1. Reserve for Important Tasks

If you run Live Activities for every minor task, they lose their impact. Use them for commitments where missing the deadline has real consequences.

2. Pair with Escalating Reminders

Live Activities provide passive visual awareness. Escalating notifications provide active interruption. Together, they create a comprehensive system where critical deadlines are both always visible and increasingly impossible to ignore.

3. Check the Expanded View

When you see your Live Activity ticking down, tap it to see the full details. This quick interaction takes less than a second and reinforces your commitment to the task.

4. Complete Tasks Promptly

When you finish a task, mark it complete from the expanded Live Activity view. This immediately updates the display and gives you the satisfaction of seeing it disappear.

The Bigger Picture

Live Activities represent a shift in how we interact with information on our phones. Instead of pulling information from apps, information pushes itself to us in a persistent, glanceable format.

For productivity, this is revolutionary. The gap between "I know I have a deadline" and "I'm constantly aware of my deadline" is the gap between missing it and meeting it.

Your most important deadlines deserve to be more than entries in a list. They deserve to be right in front of you, counting down, impossible to forget. That's exactly what Live Activities deliver.
